Product Description
Calcium presence in water supplies results from passage over deposits of limestone, dolomite, gypsum and gypsiferous shale. Its concentration may extend from 0 to several hundred milligrams per liter, depending on its source and treatment. Calcium is necessary in plant and animal nutrition since it is an essential constituent of bones, shells and plant structures. Calcium in water as carbonate is one of the primary components of water hardness which can cause pipe or tube scaling. The HI 758 Calcium Checker HC is extremely simple to use. First, zero the instrument by adding Reagent A, deionized water and 0.1 mL of sample into the vial. Insert into the HI 758 and press the button. Next, remove the vial and add Reagent B and shake to dissolve. Reinsert into the Checker HC and press the button to read the calcium concentration in ppm on the display. Use for quick and accurate on the spot analysis. Single button operation: zero and measure. Range: 200 to 600 ppm. Resolution: 1 ppm. Accuracy at 25 degree C: +/-6% of reading. Light Source: light emitting diode at 610 nm. Light Detector: Silicon Photocell. Environment: 0 to 50 degree C (32 to 122 degree F); max 95% RH non-condensing. Battery Type: (1) 1.5V AAA. Auto-off: after 10 minutes of non-use. Dimensions: 81.5mm x 61mm x 37.5mm (3.2" x 2.4" x 1.5"). Method: adaptation of the zincon method.

The Calcium Test Kit unlike other kits in their lineup does require a few more steps, but then again so do all Calcium test kits I have ever used.
At least their is NO little measuring cup to measure out a Gram of Powder LOL. The results from this unit were excellent, I used my own RO/Di water and got results that were very close to what a fresh batch of Instant Ocean mix claimed. I love the digital readout and the way these kits work, I cannot see myself using color wheels again unless Hanna does not have a kit for that test.
With the Hanna kits there are a few tricks to getting accurate results, I will be doing a you tube video on that for people to see, needless to say if you dip them in a Tank to fill the vials, after you get the level right and seal the vial, make sure to rinse the outside off and your hands with fresh water and then dry it with a paper cloth and give it a final polish with a reading glasses cleaning cloth. If you do this and use them properly you get consistent accurate results and the real beauty is that you don't have to look at anymore color charts and the test are so much easier to perform than the old school stuff. I can do 4 different tests in under 10 minutes and have good results that are repeatable.
Update: 15 Feb 2020
My Tester finally died. It seems like the button no longer works. It just stays on C1 saying to press button.
Due to the way these things are sealed I see no way of repairing it without destroying the case. I guess it's not all that bad since I got 4 YEARS of service out of it. I am ordering a new one today,
I'm not sure why some people are having accuracy issues. I do use RO/DI water (Guess mine is lab grade). I do keep up with DI and Silica resin changes and my TDS read zero. I've run the test twice in a row just to see if there was a gross difference in the readings and each time it read within 5 ppm. I chalk that up to the small difference in sample/reagent added via the pipette. I think the hardest part is adding the powered reagent. I've found that cutting the top and using a small scissors to crease open the packet allows for easier addition of the reagent to the solution. As it creates a V for the reagent to slide down into the vial. Make sure your getting all your reagent added. And be consistent with all addition of sample and liquid reagent.
For me this is an extremely helpful test device in my arsenal for keeping a eye on my tank. I also have the Hanna Phosphate and Alkalinity checker. I would recommend the Alkalinity checker as well. The phosphates are typically low in my tank so the Phosphate Checker really never gets used.
The negatives are that the API Calcium test is cheaper to run per test I believe. The powder reagent is kind of a pain to add and you have to be careful adding it. Also the price of replacement reagents is not cheap. A quick (by memory) pricing for the Hanna is it costs $0.76 per test (not counting cost of checker). Could I live without the Hanna Calcium checker? Sure, as the API test works. But, I would miss it. I'd give it 4.5 Stars. Since I can't rate 1/2 stars I rounded up. If the Calcium checker used all liquid reagents I would give is 5 stars.
If you read and follow the instructions, then you will love this tester.
I read a review about having to get water from Hanna or some other (lab grade di water)
I have a RO/DI system installed and use nuclear grade DI resin, and thats all you need if you have your own RO/DI system.
BRS is where we get our DI resin
If you don't have a system to produce your own DI water, I would be careful where you get water. A lot of places do not change the Resin like they should.
I used to use the Salifert test and still do for other test, but I will be switching over to all the Hanna testers as I run out of the old test kits.
What I really like about these testers is, you get a number, not a color to compare or how much regent is left from drops etc,.
