So true Mark ,everyone will collect stuff that has piled up over time, I used to do installs and would end up with countless leftovers, mainly plumbing pieces, I wish I’d have known this advice B4 as now I’ve got a room filled with everything from glass tanks ,which I pull apart to stuff that probably won’t get used as I’m not working anymore.
I’ll have to clean up or find a donor who could use all this stuff.
Please give us more on your tank build. Dieing to see it get life inside. When will the next Q and A be on Mark ? Great tip but it has come to late to save my messy build up.

One more quick tip – if you can’t describe the part on a list or spreadsheet, take a pic!

  • Carveth says:

Good idea. I keep a plastic box just for plumbing and toss in left over plumbing parts. The box is on the small size, for you don’t want to carry more stock than your hardware store. For new projects, I dump my plumbing toy box out on the floor and look for parts on my list. Only then do I head to the store. If I start seeing the same parts over and over, or I admit I am never going to use this one, I bag them up and take to the local restore store run by Habitat for Humanity.

Want to re-home that dosing pump? haha

  • Louis McCluer says:

I bought one of those Rubbermaid products that has three drawers in it. I keep the things I’m bound to use the most in that. Then I bought plastic bins, the type at Walmart with lids. Rather cheap, and come in different sizes. I have three or four, label them with duct tape and label them. One for pumps and parts, one for skimmer parts, one for plumbing parts, etc., you get the message. Easy to stack. Easy to see what’s in each one. Best yet, the spouse doesn’t see all the spare parts you have and say you have to much fish junk, you heed to get rid of it. They don’t understand you might need that someday, even if that day is three years from now!!
