Nice idea… Cheap to boot :D

Nice one Joel and Mark for brining it to us ;)

For smaller tanks a daily pill doser with the days of the week on will do the same trick… hide the rest of the food so they can’t ‘top it up’ … yes this happened to me!

Lol, it is how I tell my dog keeper to feed my dog too! Great tip!

Mark H. April 6, 2012 at 5:53 am

Good tip, when are we going to see your tank Mark?

Jesse April 6, 2012 at 6:29 am

Great tip! Now I should be able to prevent his from happening to me again!

Hey good tip, I went to Thailand for a couple of weeks last month. While I was in at my LFS talking to them about feeding the fish they suggested that I get one of those daily pill separators, and put the food in there. It worked a treat, if only someone could come up with an automatic glass cleaning system, I could come home from a holiday with a perfect tank.

And as Mark H said when are we going to see your new tank Mark?

Thanks
Ben

Like Matt said I use the pill box for the fish food, works like a charm.

This is a great tip. I did this exact thing when we drove to Disney World last summer. I had 10 “snack size” ziplock bags in the freezer with pre-portioned servings of Rods food and a touch of spirulina (sp?) and flake food in a few bags for some randomness and then left 10 of the 1-2 oz restaurant style side/dip bowls (don’t ask me how we came up with those!) on the counter with instructions on how our neighbors should thaw the food first and then take care of our cat & dog. By the time the walk around the block was done, the frozen food was thawed out and they just just dunked the bowl in my Biocube to spread it all around.
No casualties or spiked nitrates when we returned and the neighbor kids have a new found respect and admiration for saltwater! A win-win for everyone!

I’m with mark h. i appreciate the quick tip but when are we gonna see your tank or the video you made with vivid over the weekend?

I’ve always had a measuring spoon out and said only two scoops per day, good idea for baggie or some other container.

Bobby Thom April 6, 2012 at 10:56 am

lmao “I dont care what the fish say to you! only feed whats in the BAG!

M Harris April 6, 2012 at 11:01 am

I did this exact samething a few weeks ago when I had to go to Dallas and aked my mother-in-law to feed.
I put the amount of food in the bag I wanted fed, wrote the day to feed that bag and then taped that bag to the tank.
Since I have 25 tanks, I wanted to make sure everytank got only what it was supose to have and on that day. i was gone 4 days. So lets just say, I had ALOT of baggies taped to the tanks, let alone the fresh food for my stingrays in the frig (also marked in seperate storage cont, one for each day..) Good tip and it works.. :)

I feed mostly frozen food. Whenever I am going out of town, a few nights before I will take two ice trays and fill up each cube section with mysis, phyto, pellets, or whatever else I’m feeding my tank. Add a little RO water and freeze. Once they’re frozen I move the cubes into a ziploc bag in my freezer. Feeding instructions are written on the back: 2 cubes in the large tank each day, 1 cube in the smaller tank. It makes it simple for whomever is watching my tank, all they have to do is thaw the cubes in a cup of tank water, then pour. (dropping the cubes in while frozen often makes them end up pinned to the overflow thereby feeding the sump)

Mike…ice trays are a good call. The pill boxes people have been mentioning are a good call too. I didn’t think of those.

Byron April 8, 2012 at 9:56 pm

The most practical tip ever! So simple and easy to do. You’d think you shouldn’t have to do this. For sure you’ll wish you did if you don’t. No one likes our fish like we do.

hello good day to you. how can i prevent to get green hair algae and how can i get this in my tank?

Cheryl April 12, 2012 at 1:49 am

Hi there, I have been having a problem with green hair algae for 5 months. In the New Year I purchased the new led lights and a New protien skimmer hopeing that this would help. I am now using RO water for the last month. I only have the lights on 4 hr. per day …. a few days lights were left off. I feed every other day. What else can I do to get rid of this algae. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks so much.

Chad H. April 19, 2012 at 2:25 pm

Cheryl,
Do a couple large water changes within the next few weeks, cut your feedings to every three days. If you can pull out your rocks manually scrub off what you can. It will go away eventually.

“I don’t care what the fish say to you…only feed what’s in the bag!” <<< As he's pointing vigorously at the bag and staring you in the eyeballs. LOL! Love it Mark!
