Mr. Saltwater Tank

Mr. Saltwater Tank TV Friday Am Quick Tip #83: Salty, But Not Friendly

You always want your saltwater tank to look great and cleaning it one way to get that task done. Stressing your corals out while cleaning your tank is a bad thing so don’t make this mistake when you are putting the polish on your tank.

    Nice one… Happy Reefing!

  • Thanks Mad Hatter!

  • Mad Hatter's Reef says:

BTW….. Thats a rough Thumbnail Mark.

  • Mad Hatter…ummm…I’ll make sure I run out and get a manicure today. It’ll have to wait till I’m done fragging though as I wouldn’t want to get a manicure then chip a nail…

  • Shane W. says:

If you say the S.C. on my tank you would never want it in your tank! I have 3 cats and 2 dogs. Too much animal hair mixed in with the S.C. Thanks Mark for your Friday morning Q.T.

Not sure if this is the right place to post this but I messed up pretty good this morning so any help with damage control would be appreciated. Long story short I put some chopped table shrimp into my 28g and 29g tanks this morning. Come to find out it was dipped into sodium metasulfite which im assuming is a preservative, anyways did not go well. Corals shriveled up and my skimmers started going crazy. Thankfully I took your advice on going plus one on the skimmers both are easily rated over 2X for my 28g and 29g tanks. My amonia levels are ~0 but things still dont look very good. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. MANY THANK FOR MR. SALTWATER TANK. Happy Friday.

    Nice tip.

@freshDiv, stick to fish/coral food only. it must be rough caring for 2 tanks that small. upgrade to a 55 or 75, itll make life easier. I bet your nitrates are really high (corals hate that).

  • Abdullah says:

I am not sure if this is true or a myth? But well taken. Thanks.

  • Brian Davis says:

    Seriously Abdullah (:
Take some salt creep, drop it on your corals and takes notes, lol. Just teasing you. Yes it’s true.

You need to do a water change, a large water change.

Good tip Landon – I recall when this accidentally happened to one of my Green Bubble Tip Anemone’s. It sucked. It recovered well but did have 3 scar like markings on it ever since. The salt creep was about the size of a dime and I couldn’t prevent it after it fell in. I have never seen an anemone deflate that quickly before!

  • Stephanie says:

I often wondered if it effected the tank, now I know! Thanks for the quick tip.

  • Landon says:

Brian Davis: Thanks. I have three anemones and I know it would be very bad to have some salt creep fall on them. Glad that yours recovered.

  • Landon says:

Mark, thanks for using my tip. I know that it can be very detrimental for salt creep to fall on a coral.

  • Peyton says:

Cmon mark, you gotta show us the tank!

  • Mad Hatter's Reef says:

You know I’m just kidding around with you, Mark. Now you kinda look like super hero with that play button over your eyes.

    New Niche:
A man while fragging comes in contact with palytoxin and It gives him the power to help his fellow hobbyist’s tanks with poor husbandry in a flash. It’s a Bird Wrasse… It’s a Teal Acropora Plana… It’s Super Mr. Saltwater Tank 😛

  • dave decarli says:

my tip for my fellow reefer’s is. if you are feeding “live” food stuff’s like brine shrimp krill or small rotifiers is first i was it in a strainer because the water they use is I M O is dirty unfiltered. so a good rinse helps phosphate problems from un eaten food. but the BIG TIP is i use an tooth brush! you can target live brine vs dead brine you can control how much you add at one time instead of just “dumpimg” food in your tank thats where the phosphate problem comes in. so that’s how i do it and i hope it helps you! thanks MR SALTWATER TANK for an awsome site. P.S if you chose to use it let me know i would like to see it. (i think it would be cool) 🙂

  • Ariel brown says:

Thanks, I didn’t know that could hurt my coral

  • Allen says:

Why is it now that everytime you make a video Mark, we never get to see your tank. I think the onky time I have seen it is when you first started the tank and when you had an outbreak.
What, do we have to pay to see your tank?

  • Allen…different shows are shot different ways for a variety of reasons. For example, the Tunze 6095 show was shot months ago before my current tank even existed. And this Friday Quick Tip was shot when there was considerable glare on the front of the tank which would affect the camera.
