  • Matt says:

I’ve always used newspaper to clean glass. I learned that trick from car detailing.

  • This is a trick that I learned when I worked in an art supply and picture framing store. The master framer also cleaned the glass with newspaper, even when framing expensive artwork!

  • Jennifer Sampson says:

This works great the only drawback is that you get the ink on your hands
I’ve use this process on my car windows my home windows for years its awesome and works great

  • My Gran taught me this one. Vinegar and newspaper works great too

  • Steve Leng says:

    Hey mark
As always great shows. I have been using the newspaper idea since I was a lad working in a butchers shop. Home windows and tank glass sparkle like diamonds. Use vinegar on your home windows instead of harmfull chemicals.

For our business we use blank newspaper to pack with and to wipe down our aquarium with as well. Its very cheap and works great. Find it a your local shipping supply company.

I just use windolene. Never had issues and leaves no residue. Just use common sense not to spray it in the water and it works quickly and leaves no residue

  • Marcos says:

Cleaning glass with newspaper is an old school trick to clean car windows, but watch out because the “magic” of newspaper is that it is a little “abrasive”, like very fine 10,000 grit or higher sandpaper. When you clean glass with it you are actually “polishing” and with time it WILL create micro scratches. In a car window these micro scratches can be visible in an angle when the sun or strong light hits it. Maybe in a tank these are not noticeable since light comes from inside and the angle is not the right one to see them.

  • Jason says:

    I just use a squeegee

  • Rob C says:

Only use black-and-white newspaper , if you must use it. Don’t use color ads pages because they are hundred percent ink. Make sure there’s no salt dried on the on the glass or you will scratch the hell out of it, especially saphire glass. I prefer using a microfiber cloth with a mixture of RODI water and vinegar 50-50, it absorbs anything that’s on the surface does not scratch into the glass. Save the newspaper for the auto/home detailing. The windshield takes a lot more abuse because, it’s tempered safety glass .

  • DC says:

Try a microfiber towel. Get a package from Costco or Sam’s. They absorb water much better than paper towels or newspaper and don’t leave streaks.

  • David says:

Never would have thought of that. Plenty of newspaper too. It’ll be put to good use. Thanks Mark

  • Jim says:

Hi yes we have all used newspaper since the beginning of time but there is always a but newspaper actually scratches glass depending on the country you are in most are around 8000 to 10,000 grit that means it produces scratches you cant always see but over time the glass will begin to look not as good as it used to especially saphire glass or other high visual glass we normally get on the front of aquariums. just ask any Optometrist they will prove it to you, you don’t clean your spectacles with newspaper so why clean an aquarium with it, Mark stick with the paper towels they have been designed for that exact purpose cleaning glass. sorry to the quick tip person but you were right mark it is not a good idea

  • Pierre Bouic says:

The type of Ink used is what cleans the glass, this is a tip from years ago but recently a home and life style show said to check the ink on a piece of glass somewhere that won’t be seen because printing companies have change the type of ink, I did just this finding it not as good at cleaning glass as it once was, finding a piece of glass that doesn’t matter is kind of impossible because if its clear its used to see thru. I remember using newspaper in the 70’s to clean a whole school of windows for a work bee and other than my arms feeling sore it worked well but now it just smears, but some ink is still good so I’d check the local rags pages and see.

  • Damion says:

Thanks for the tip, I’ve been using newspaper for years.
I expected to see you listed on the speakers list for MACNA 2014, what happened Mark? Thanks for all you do.

  • Michael Molsoe says:

This is also the method which I use to clean my fireplace window, and boy can that glass get dirty with sod 🙂 Works like a charm !

  • Damion…I wasn’t asked to talk this year. I will be in attendance though and if you are there make sure you say hi

  • Dee From Brooklyn says:

That’s all I use with a cap full of plain riving alcohol which prevents steaks and salt creep. God to recycle the paper as well.

  • ReeferRay says:

I use a dry micro fabric cloth, it polishes the glass every well, looks like you can reach right in and grab a coral…
