  • Mark H. says:

Mark, when are we going to get a peak at your big tank?

  • Mike says:

Hate to ruin the secret, but the one thing it can’t deal with is…..

    The Spanish Inquisition!

  • Wade says:

Waste of time, this and most of videos are just adds.

  • Nuno says:

Last video I’ll ever see from you. I understand that you are trying to make a living, but this nonsense guide after guide, add after add is not really working for me. The thing about you is that you went all commercial and no helping the little guy, the one who wants to be a reef junkie but can’t afford it. I wish you well.

  • Mack says:

I don’t mind the plugs for the guides and stuff, but when useful content is replaced by those plugs, I get less interested in the videos and way less interested in the stuff you’re advertising.

These used to be helpful videos that provided good information to reefkeepers, not so much anymore.

  • Willie says:

I started looking at your video last yr, thought I found the best video information ever. Watched all your videos, and purchased two of your guild. Purchased some equipments from you. But the past 6 months, seems like you are running out of useful info. The not so funny video 6 mins long video with 15 second of message, and videos after videos of ad, to ask people to buy more guild without anything useful. I understand everybody needs to make a living but, you are so far off from what you were doing at first. Also some information that you give out are too one sided personnal opinion, such as pom pom xenia is the worst coral of all. Gd luck, gd reefing. I am out

  • Jeffry says:

I have to agree with Nuno and Mack, I miss the good old days when you made videos to help people out, not just to make a few bucks.

  • bill mitchell says:

yes mark I agree with everyone else
I also tune into Newyork steelo for useful hints on reef aquarium hints
where is the mr saltwater tank from last year, had useful hints to share with newbies and now to get a hint we have to buy a book
bought your last one and the there was not that much in it that was useful
    where is the unsubscribe button

  • joe says:

Really? you put a video out and tell me there is one thing i cant do with a refuge and then tell me to buy your book?! You know what Mark? I was thinking of buying your book after watching the first video you had telling us about it, but this kind of teaser crap pisses me off enough that you helped me make up my mind on the book. Nope, wont be buying anything from you now.

    Regards

  • JP says:

Too many haters! This isn’t a cheap hobby if you cant afford it don’t do it simple as that! It relays on lots of research and time, mark is putting all of that in a simple guide to help out people who don’t know what they’re doing! Nothing is free in this world so stop bitching at mark! Mark keep up the great work, still love all your vids!

  • Bill says:

The best thing about this video was the comments. I have to agree with the majority here, I use to look foward to your videos for helpful ideas. I’m having some nuisance algae and thought cool, I can get some good ideas about what to do, but nope just an add for a book. Not cool at all! Your videos use to be helpful, but lately it seems like you just suggest books to buy or products from companys that are fatening your wallet. Ive been watching for amost a year, but Im just about done with this bs.

  • Greg says:

    Mark,

I really have enjoyed being a subscriber for the last 12+ months. I can appreciate wanting to make a living at something you love to do. I respect that. I really can see what the others are saying…. it really does seem that your individual “tank personality” has changed from fun and informative, to a “pitchman”, in the vain of a “slap chop” salesman. Take heed to your audience feed back. Good luck.

  • Marko says:

These videos suck. All you’re doing is rebranding and selling information that anyone can simply find on google for free. What even makes you an expert? A marine biology degree?

  • chuck says:

Thought maybe you were throwing us a bone after the last video feed back.Wrong, DELETE!

  • Mad Hatter's Reef says:

As Much Work, Thought and Time… Mark places into giving us “Mr. Saltwater Tank” I think it’s a little unfair for those of us that come at him swinging anytime he places a price on Premium Content. It’s unfair to him and all the work that he does for Our Education and Entertainment as Saltwater Aquarium Hobbyist. He doesn’t throw Ads all over his website and videos… He doesn’t ask for handouts or charity, like “others” mentioned above. IT’S THE SAME AS PAYING FOR A BOOK! IF YOU DON’T WANT TO PAY FOR THE BOOK THEN GO TO THE LIBRARY… The Saying Goes….If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all!

  • Greg says:

That’s cool and all that you wanna make money from this. But this guide bs is ridiculous. This is the last video I’ll ever watch from you. Later!

  • Nick says:

I agree with the majority as well. I’ve been in the hobby for a couple years and learned most useful things from other reefer’s on forums. I do enjoy the videos and mark’s personality. Don’t need to buy anything else though. For you guys with display tank algea look into an algae scrubber. It’s an easy diy. I’ve had one on both my tanks for over a year and have zero display tank algae and zero nitrates or phosphates without regular waterchanges( did it just to see if it could do it… It did just fine). It made the hobby much more affordable and enjoyable for me.

  • Tobias Hvidberg says:

Sad that i don’t got the money to buy the guide right now. I got what i think is cyano, i use RO water, active carbon, rowaphos, 2*250 Ferplast Bluskimmers for my 200L (112L refugium (about 50L filled)), i got 3 fishes a the moment, do water changes, i have tried Anti-Red, RSR and Excital, When i add other algeas they instantly get covered with cyano, i got enough flow (also between the rocks), i have tried turning off the lights, i have changed from T5 to LED light and i feed my fishes every 3rd day with a small amount of pellets/flakes, still no one can give me an answer to my problem. People keeps telling me to just re-do my tank and see if it works but i don’t want to. I have been fighting the cyano for about a half year now.

  • Lander says:

I agree with the rest, I have watched all your videos and looked forward to seeing the new videos come out, but now they are all trying to sell me something! The first hundred videos I watched said nothing ever about buying something, they were just to help out people in the hobby, not anymore. This was the worst video you have done! Last one I’ll be watching of yours.
    SAD!

  • Lisa says:

    Hi Mark,
I think you’re info and videos are GREAT! I appreciate all the time you take to explain things and I especially like the quick tips. Don’t listen to all these bad comments. Keep up the good work!

  • Reg says:

You seem to have a new tank personality. It appears to be ‘let me lead them along, then sell my product’.

  • paco B says:

This is too funny and too much, like someone said before if u dont like it dont buy it!!!! If u dont want to be around dont be but quit spamming his site with all these freedom of speech comments, go to ur respective forums and rant about it … thats all. Every since the so call economy went down everyone wants FREE stuff, stop and go find a job so u can afford the hobby, there are jobs in this coutry and also lazy people not wanting to work because its not the same as what they had before. Come to the west lots of work here and no one willing to sacrifice, a job is a need not a privilege… (i can see all the comments coming)

  • Jolene says:

I have to agree with the majority as well. I was pretty disappointed after I purchased two guides from Mark, and after reading through both, I gained no further knowledge, and it definitely didn’t cause me to make any changes with my existing tank. I really felt like I threw away about $60. A part of me wants to purchase the new algae guide (although my tank isn’t suffering from any – purely for extra knowledge), but I am extremely hesitant, because the price is a little ridiculous, and I’m afraid I won’t learn anything new. These new videos promoting the guides are pretty annoying, and an easy way to lose followers, plus there hasn’t been any type of helpful hints or tips given in quite a while. Mark’s opinions and ideas about maintaining a saltwater tank are just that – his personal opinions. Nothing proven or backed by science, and no, he’s not a marine biologist. It’s really not much different than browsing a reef forum, with some members being in the saltwater hobby for 20+ years, except Mark has his very own site, and is able to contribute a lot more time to it. I honestly think I’ve learned more just by reading Vivid Aquarium’s website. No disrespect at all, but this is just my opinion about it. …Tobias, one thing you can try is replenishing your pod population as well as your good bacteria. Since you have treated your tank with meds, most likely you killed off a bunch of beneficial bacteria and creatures. Manually remove the cyano, if you’re not already doing so. I’m a believer in a deep sand bed as well… does wonders for a tank (if utilized properly – no sand sifting/fauna consuming creatures, etc), and bye bye nitrates and phosphates naturally!

  • Matt says:

Like alot of your followers, I felt misled Mark…nothing of value in this video. Go back to the soft sell with value added content. I’ve considered buying your stuff because it may “reduce the risk, save time”, ect. vs doing my own research and digging thru hours of content on RC. Feeling misled or feeling like youve wasted my time is exactly the opposite type of buying motivation your shooting for, correct? What Ive learned from years of sales is…Feelings are facts and perception is reality.

  • Chicago C4 says:

Can you rename this page “Why I think you should buy my Algae guide” so in the future I don’t have to waste three minutes watching it and two minutes typing this comment.

  • john says:

    Mark

Dont let everyone bring you down i have learned almost everything i known about reef tanks from you and own all your guides there’s a lot of us reefers that appreciate all the time and effort you put into everything. keep up the good work you do for all of us that rely on you for the right information.

    Thank-you. !!!!!!!

  • king says:

That is about enough…. I also realize you are trying to sell your guides but the videos over the year or so I have been watching them have been basic entertainment and not sales pitches with the exception of the few that were clearly adds for your new guide you were hocking at the time. Putting a hidden pitch and “secret” info only available if you buy the guide is really poor practice……

  • brandon m says:

Sorry Mark, I too agree. Felt so let down by this. U should have said this super secret thing and then added the plug afterwards saying there are more helpful hints in your guides that ppl would find helpful. It’s all in how you present it. A lot of ppl feel like you bait and switched them. Now their hurt and right fully so. Put out another video with your idea of the algae solution and then pitch the guide. I hope you lots of success and will continue to follow along bc I believe you have slit to give. But just try to present your pitches a bit more discrete so ppl don’t get upset

  • brandon m says:

So yea…slit* was alot* just don’t want you to think that is was something else :). Again. Best of luck. Hope to see more of the old mr saltwater mixed with the new

  • Jim G says:

I too agree with most comments here. I am unsubscribing as I don’t need anymore ads. I bought one guide and found it interesting but not overly useful. At $9.95 I would be more interested but I am looking at other sites that share more for free. Mr Saltwater has moved from a hobbyist to a businessman. Don’t blame him at all. it just doesn’t fit my needs any longer.

  • Henry says:

Sorry Mark, but you went commercial today, i feel a little frustrated because you was my guide, but today and from the day i paid extra for new videos on NSG 2 i feel frustrated :), I know it is to much job to put all this together, you need time but i have not that much money sorry men but thats my feeling about.

  • omar says:

Yeh mark you lost me, this video is where i un-subscribe from your email list.

  • Weatherman says:

    Hi Mark,

I’m not mad at you. I understand you are trying to make your hobby self-sustaining and perhaps turn it into a profitable venture. But I am really disappointed. I used to check my email first thing Friday morning looking for the next witty and informative quick tip. They always made my day. Now I feel like I’ve just watched a Sham-wow infomercial. You’re better than this. Get back to what you do best: putting a face on the hobby that people can relate to and trust. I used to feel like I almost knew you. Like you were the

  • Brandon Harrop says:

He didn’t say it was a quick tip or a learning video. He even told you about fighting algae with algae. Time is taken to make each video, edit each video, equipment costs and constant fresh content on the site. Not to mention he’s done all this for a few years now for FREE! I have no problem shelling out a few dollars here and there for the information that he sat down and wrote from scratch. If you put as much work in as he has wouldn’t you like to be paid for your time? He comes out with a few guides at a premium price and you all turn because its not free.. Tell me the 1 person on here who would continue to do this for free?….not many hands going up.. they information he has give over the years has been amazing and helped me stay in a hobby I really wanted to make work. If it wasn’t for mark, this site and the guides id be out and selling my whole tank.. Reef keeping IS an expensive hobby and i think he’s entitled to a few extra bucks because if i didn’t read the guides i was on track of buying the wrong equipment and i woulda bought twice and WASTED countless dollars. And if your saying well thats because I’m an amateur then what are you doing on this site anyway if your so smart? He saved me hundreds of dollars by informing the proper equipment to get. Yes i could have searched SEVERAL different sites and googled all night but this is a one stop shop, neatly packaged so anyone from amateur to professional can understand what he’s talking about in order from start to finish. You don’t want the guide don’t buy it…simple as that, but don’t complain how its unfair and his work should be free for you.. the videos are in depth and goes out of his way to e-mail you back if you don’t understand something.. I have YET to see the LFS that offers any advice CLOSE to anything on here…Dont complain because you wanna be cheap…..Dont buy the guide.. But don’t expect people to do things for free for you forever….

  • Weatherman says:

Damn tab key. Sorry, let me continue. Like you were the aquarist next door. The “good guy” who always had good advice or a great new idea. You know, it almost seems like you’ve gotten burned out on the hobby a little and are just focusing on getting something back out of it for yourself. To me, you’re projecting an attitude of “I deserve something back because of all that I’ve put in”. While I can understand the feeling, it can really be a turn-off for a lot of people.
I’m going to keep watching as I hope most of the other folks out here do, with the hope that the old “Mark next door” comes back. I miss that guy. I really learned a lot from him and more importantly, I was really inspired to take my tank to the next level because of him.

  • Weatherman says:

Oh, one more thing. I would definitely be more inclined to buy a guide from the old Mark as opposed to Sham-wow Mark. I don’t have a problem paying for a good product coming from a person I trust.

  • Mike Johnson says:

Okay, enough of the hateful replies. I’d like a truthful poll of how many of you would like to get sponsors to give you equipment. I am a marine biologist and one glance at one of my tanks and I can tell what needs to be done. I am 100% in favor of a DSB, LOTS of real live rock, don’t overstock. The rocks are the coolest part. There’s barely a week that goes by that my wife or me say, “what’s that growing in there?” I’m really not into reducing phosphates, definitely no OTC additives. I really like my plants. Oh, before you think I’m flaunting my knowledge – why do you think I get Mark’s e-mails? I have an extensive library. You can never know it all and I’ve made mistakes. One mistake was adding a Phosban reactor(killed my prized saltwater ferns), or adding a Raccoon Butterflyfish(ate everything, not just aptasia) – major tank personality changes. I’m rambling, but the jest of this is that Mark is an amatuer reefer and it’s obvious. What do you expect? Keep on trucking and learning Mark.

  • Jolene says:

Brandon, I don’t think anyone is expecting his guides to be free. I definitely don’t. I agree it takes a lot of time and effort to put together the guides – especially for a hobby as confusing to most, as this hobby is – but $37 for an online copy? I have a beautiful hard cover book written by a marine biologist, with multiple professional colored pictures of every coral you can think of, along with scientific information about each animal, and it cost $32. So, when I think $37 for a fellow saltwater hobbyist’s opinions is too much, I have every right to feel that way. This hobby is expensive enough as it is, but the expense of the hobby doesn’t justify charging super high prices for an ‘online book’. Online books are usually cheaper! I think the biggest complaint is more so that Mark’s agenda has changed. He used to give out very helpful advice, and seemed to want to genuinely help other reef keepers, but now he seems more concerned with making money. Such is the story with most people in the saltwater business… *sigh*

  • stel1os72 says:

Are we really gonna go down this road again everyone? EVERY time this guy tries to sell one of his guides, he gets blasted. Enough already! THIS IS HIS JOB PEOPLE? He’s not sittin’ at home counting your money and making vacation plans! How could he? After shooting video, running his site, returning emails, Friday quick tips (i can keep going), I’m surprised the guy has time to breathe, or more importantly spend ANY time with his family. Stop being brats!…we’ve been receiving free vids and info for a couple of years now. But when he wants money for putting the vids and info all together in a nice little neat package, so our lazy asses don’t have to search the web for it, we start the rant all over again!!!! I bet Mark works more hours a week than 95% of the people who are complaining. THE GUY WORKS HIS ASS OFF! It’s not all hobby time here folks..realize that! As for the ads and product pitches, who cares!! This is how bills get paid! Mark’s vids are NO diff’t than watching the NFL or your precious reality shows. Does that mean i HAVE to go out and buy from their sponsors? NO, his hand is not in your wallet and he’s not the one who’s fingers are punching in the credit card info online. We ALL have a mind of our own…USE IT! IF u don’t think his info is useful, just pass. Please don’t berate the guy and do it in this fashion. Like someone above said, rant elsewhere. Why do we have to read your vile comments when all we want to do is relax with a website that most of us enjoy. And, the issue here is not about jumping to Mark’s defense, cause i too did not have any use for this latest guide…it wasn’t for me. But guess what, the credit card stayed in the wallet, and maybe the next guide WILL be helpful to someone like myself. Hopefully Mark will still be doing all of my work for me for years to come..LOL! I don’t think i need to worry though, Mark’s got a thick skin and haters are always gonna keep on hatin’!!!!!

  • slakker187 says:

ooooh man! at least im not the only one that felt burnt on that vid. but look at that backlash. seems as though you should have given that helpful tip instead of trying to refer people to page 15 in your guide. had you have done that, you probably would have sold some books.
    oooooooooops!!!

  • Daniel says:

When the hell did he say this is what he does for a living how do you know he does not have a job and he is using your money to go on vacation. Do you know him. Mark you should have created a different sight for selling crap. Cause now your losing followers and there dropping like flies. One thing comes to mind now when I watch your videos SELL OUT have fun making your money and well not really helpping at all. Peace!

  • david says:

Wow, a LOT of the above comments seem to have very similar wording and structure, i have a feeling that a lot of the comments above are posted by the same one or two individuals. And if they are not? LEAVE ! who cares if you dont like what he is doing, its his site, his videos and this is how he makes some cash to be able to afford this hobby. He still puts out a TON of great helpful videos all the time, big deal if he has some that sell his books. If you dont like it, dont watch, its as simple as that… go watch some NY Steelo ! haha, have fun with that…. haha. or maybe the expert over at LA fishguy, LOTS of brilliant info over there…. haha. Keep up the good Mr Saltwater tank, i love your shows !! you rock, let the haters hate, no one is listening to them anyways, you keep on keepin on and never stop making these Great Vids !!

  • Matt says:

Chicago C4 said it best….rename the title to “Why I think you should buy my Algae guide” and no one gets their panties in a wad.

  • JamesD says:

I personally want to see more of these troll videos from you mark, the angry comments are a good laugh to read, because you are clearly intentionally trolling everyone right? With that video naming. I haven’t felt so blatantly deceived since I finished watching LOST.

  • Kanye West says:

Yo Mark, im really happy for you, but newyorksteelo had one of the best free informational video of all time!

  • Greg says:

People with the “haters” comments, I just don’t see it. No one is attacking Mark personally. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I think if the title in the email said ” This is a commercial from Mr. Saltwater tank” in the subject line, I think there wouldn’t be any issue with this particular video. You either buy or don’t buy; but you know what it is before you watch.

Having said all of that, Mark is still a big positive for the hobby. Cheers.

  • Chris Kennedy says:

I think Mark has got the point that most of his Fans are not happy .you can call them Haters if you want but sometimes we need to know if we are we are selling or helping out is doing a good job or if we need to work or word things different.i think Mark knows what he has to do and what he is willing to do to help people and work out things to make more people happy.mark i know you mean well and you are a good guy and you do work hard at this and mostly i will buy your next guide.maybe when your going to sell a guide you can call it Mr Saltwater Guide Time.I’m still a fan and i know you will have a lot of great thing for us to come.

  • daniel says:

Thanks Mark for helping and making us videos, I’ve made videos for my fitness studio and I know how much work goes into them and how much time and money it takes, I for one really appreciate what you do, new York steeelo, and Jim at lafishguy are doing. Feed back from clients help us all improve, and the one thing I have learned from being in sales and owning my own business is that you can’t make everyone happy, so don’t try. I for one support you trying to make something you love bring in money.

  • Mark's other pet...Mr Troll says:

Troll so hard make motherfkers wanna find me, that shet Kray, that shet Kray!

  • Cliff says:

Everyone needs to understand the time and money Mark puts into this website. Maybe there should be a small annunal fee to see these clips and ideas and then if they are good ideas the site will grow and Mark can continue to put them out. You can’t expect someone to do all this work and pay for it all with no return? Think of your tank as a business and your paying consulting fees to keep it running, if that doesn’t make sence you shouldn’t be in business. The hints, ideas, videos, and everything else are great, now it’s just a matter of how to compensate Mark for his effort and continue to get new information. How much would you pay per year for all the ideas Mark has and the email he answers? $10, $50, $100 think about what you have in your tank for costs and then answer that question. Just an idea back for you Mark that you might consider. I have thousands of dollars invested in my tank(business) so paying for it to keep running is expected. BTW I do own 3 companies, have several hundred people working for me, and pay consulting fees on different ocasions so I understand the business side of things. I’m not trying to start a arguement here, just explaining simple business models.
