Mr. Saltwater Tank

Replay of The Question and Answer Session With Mr. Saltwater Tank on 12/29/2013

The last question and answer session of 2013 was a “throwback” session. Instead of focusing on a specific topic, I answered viewers questions for the whole show.

Great recap, Happy New Year Mark.
Congrats on the Daughter. Enjoy the first 12 years when they are Daddy’s girl. That will help you deal with the dating when they turn 16.
    Loved the show.

    Hello Mark,

First and foremost, congrats on your new baby girl that is on the way!!! You mentioned about going to the firing range… Just show the potential boyfriend your paper targets and your groupings. That’s all is takes. Ha ha!!!
Regarding the sump drain pipe and above/below the water line… I use a Maggie Muffler in the overflow with a piece of foam stuck in the air hole to muffle the sound even more. Some noise but not bad. Of course if its in the bedroom then it might be a problem. If I have it above the water line, yes bad water noise. If I have it below the water line I got gurgling sound that resonated through the stand. I used a 90 right at the water line where the upper 1/3 of the 90 is out of the water for air. Very little to no noise from the sump and no salt crawl when used with a sock. Worked for me.
Great show! One of these days I will attend a live answer/question session.
    Best regards

Hi Mark congrats on the new baby. In the new year Q & A session you talk about using sea water & ask does anyone have this option. Well yes I do have it available. At Port Stevens north of Sydney Australia where I live its at the southern end of the sub-tropical zone of Australia, with the southern most inshore coral & sponge garden dive spot called Fly point.
The State Government body called NSW fisheries does deliver salt water to local fishing industry people, & my friend’s dad has a lobster fishing licence and so because he keeps live lobsters (crayfish to you guys maybe) this organisation delivers a few hundred gallons each week of sea water pumped right onto his holding tank. The reason I’ve not taken advantage of this is because a well respected member of the aquarium industry on the east coast of Aust. Peter Jordan who went to college with J.E.N Vernon years ago and went to James Cook University in Townsville Queensland told me not to use this water supply for a few reasons. Pollution being one, namely outboard boat motor fuel, faecal matter from our large summer tourist population, and finally parasitic problems. This all surprised me as Port Stevens is fairly secluded with a population of less than 60,000 except for the summer break when it 4 times that. What do you think, am I missing out on a good supply of sea water by taking this advice. My tank system is around 200 gal. and I want to upgrade some time soon, so free water would be a good saving. Is it really to much of a risk. This water is collected at the local boat ramps, whichever is the cleanest, we get that turquoise water in summer from the east Aust. belt
    so its tempting.

I would not recommend using natural sea water for one huge reason: pollution. There is a ton of pollution that drains into the sea from coastal towns, and if your water is not collected miles from shore, then your at a high risk of putting pollutants as well as nitrates and phosphates (garden drainage) into your tank. This risk is even higher during the rain season, as water nutrients spike in coastal ocean waters from runoff.

  • Hi here is my tank and what i have in it can you please tell me if i need anything else. thank you for helping me
