Good tip Mark, I always buy corals/fish that needs some TLC.
75% of the time the “Blue Thumb” pays off.

My LFS only has browned out SPS frags (unfortunately), but are always willing to have colorful frags added to their tanks. Maybe a trade is an option. A colorful frag from your tank for a browned out frag from theirs. It’s worth a try!

  • James says:

Just want to mention, take extra precaution when buying brown corals and dip, dip, dip! Might be a good idea to cut the base and re mount these too. They are brown for a reason.

  • Arthur says:

Nice tip! We all could save some cash! Thanks for all your hard work!

  • I alway look for the tlc frags. Some.i the smallest misfits have become my biggest tank stars. I have a purple mushroom obtained from a single piece under a plug which has cultivated dozens which i have traded and given away

My LFS often has brown out corals. They don’t have the best knowledgable staff, i.e. Petco/Petsmart. What do you guys do to recover the coral?
First is dip. Coral Rx. Then what? Any special treatment? Separate frag tank? Could use advise to safe these coral from death and save $$$ and my love for reef. I am a pro diver. Thanks guys.

This is a good tip especially if you have some good high end lighting, but also must remember to start the brown frag lower as it is usually in that poor state for a reason. This big store in my nearest large city which has a good reputation has a fish guy who is more concerned with ridding their set-up of nu-sense algae and was giving it the odd kalk bomb & regular white water additions (not recommended) thus browning off all their acro species, so I would go in and but them cheap, needless to say he is now wiser to his mistakes, But I got some great pieces and lost some as they were too damaged. beware of any slime or necrosis.

Worked for me! Never been much of an SPS (other than montis) type of guy. But my buddy at my LFS gave me a bunch of browned out acros & monits out of the show tank. They colored up in no time and I dont even dose other than fuel/phytofeast! Give it a try!

    Hey Mark.

We need updates of your tank man!

How’s the Hydor Performer treating you?

  • Lisa Foster says:

I did that at MAX and -almost- got a nice monti out of the deal…but just as it was really starting to look good, an asterina starfish ate it. :'(
