Mr. Saltwater Tank

How to Upgrade Your Saltwater Tank Like a Reef Junkie

While there is nothing wrong with a nano saltwater tank, if you’re a reef junkie, you’re very likely want to upgrade…quickly. And upgrade in true reef junkie style is what one of my VIP clients did. Not only did he upgrade, he went over the top by having me plan and construct his whole tank.

His build included taking over part of his garage, putting holes in walls…i.e. re-arranging his life around his fish tank.

    Hi Mark,
Very cool setup. Where can i get the water storage containers that you show in this video? I want to make the same fresh water to salt water gravity system. Any info would be appreciated.

Mark: Thats awsome.. It must have been a lot of fun to put together that system. Not many of us get a chance to build a system from scratch with no real limitations on space. I’m curious if you did any kind of preliminary design sketching of the components and layout? Or did you just wing it as you went. I’m also wondering if you considered putting the sump tank in the garage for easier access? Can’t wait for the rest of your report on the build out. I’m envious.. 🙂

    Cheers..

  • Buddy…lots of drawings and revisions went into this build. We considered the sump in the garage, but due to the extreme summer heat (60+ days of 100+ degrees F is normal for this location), it didn’t make sense.

  • I have been absent for some time, but now I remember why I used to love this blog. Thank you, I will try and check back more frequently. How frequently you update your site?

I’m kinda new to the whole salt water tank in the research phase I was wondering is a sump absolutely necessary if I plan on NOT raising corals and sticking with a FOWLR setup because I have heard a lot of horror story’s about people’s sumps flooding when the power goes out

Hey just curious by having the salt water mix container that is not black and lets light in wouldn’t there eventually be an algae problem that could happen in there?

  • matt says:

how can i be a vip person on ur website

  • Matt…VIP membership is for people who have spent $1000 with me. This is done through hiring me as a consultant or purchasing gear through me.

I was just wondering the size and gauge of stainless steel that was used for this build. Thanks in advance.

  • Andrew…I believe it was 2″ stainless.

  • Thanks for the article, it was interesting and compelling. I found my way here through Google, I will come back another time

    Hey Mark,

I am planning on upgrading my 10 gallon nano reef to a slightly larger 16 gallon haha. If I use the filter media, live rock and some sand from my current tank can I just add my clowns and zoas as well? Will I have to cycle again?

    Thanks,

    Joe
