Mr. Saltwater Tank TV Friday Am Quick Tip #84: Look Before You Rinse Your Filter Socks

I’m a big fan of filter socks as they can help make your saltwater tank look really good.  These same socks can trap friendly critters that are worth saving for your tank’s sake and your fish will thank you too.

Little devils don’t half squirm about when you try to collar them mind! 😛

Great tip… not so sure on the use of what looks suspiciously like felt filter socks mind 😉

Thanks for that tip Mark. I’ve always done this but I’m sure there are some that just never thought of it. Good job bringing it to others attention.

    Mark,

Thanks for the tip. How do you clean your filter socks ?

  • Dino D says:

Here’s a question. When I change out my poly floss on my bio cube 29 it’s loaded with live pods. How do you suggest I get those back in my tank? The floss is done and dirty and needs to tossed. I’ve tried throwing the floss in the water change bucket and then trying to net them with a brine net. This made for a very tedious task at the least. I gave up on that idea. Any other suggestions?

    Thanks

    Dino

I dont use a filter sock bc it holds phosphates. I let the skimmer do the work, along w the mangrove trees, an algea. Do a frequent water change good to go.

  • Bob says:

I dono why but it happens to me to find two of my sexy shrimp in filer sock as well. It worth looking before washing. Thanks for Vid tho, I thought I am the only one who look everytime 🙂

  • Lars says:

Craig I agree! I hate cleaning the socks and would appreciate any tips or tricks Mark might want to share about that process and the method he uses to do it.

  • Chantal says:

Dino, I leave my media out a little while and they start coming on top that when I get the pods

  • Craig says:

Does anyone have or seen a mini pressure washer that could be used in a sink? I tried the one I have for the patio but destroyed the socks. A little to much pressure I guess. On the upside they looked brand new minus the holes.

  • johnny says:

i put bleach in mine. Just make sure afterwards that you allow them to dry completely for the bleach to evaporate. I have washed my felt socks on delicate with bleach probably 80-90 times, and they are still going..

Or have you done this already :s
